The KNiT

The KNiT is a Dublin Knit Collective initiative for Dublin Knitters to share their love for knitting.

Here at Knitting HQ, September is the start of a new knitting year and new projects. To kick off The KNiT, I want to share my knitterly passion by organising knitting sessions for beginners in Dublin 6.

Knitworking is a casual and informal meeting in a local cafe.

What will it cost?
Your beginner’s lesson is FREE!!!! However, you will be required to make a purchase from the cafe’s menu (it’s also about supporting the local business : )

What knitting skills will you learn?
Let’s start with the basics with cast on, knit and purl stitches…and take it from there.

What do you need to bring to the knitworking session?

1) Knitting needles: the best size to learn on is 5.5mm to 7mm. You can select bamboo, wood, metal, plastic

2) Yarn: The best yarn to get is something simple and bright, try a DK weight or maybe something a bit thicker. Try looking for something easy to see and not too fancy. Your yarn does not need to be boring. All I ask that the yarn NOT BE BLACK as you will not see your stitches. Do not choose yarn that is too fluffy or wispy as it will be a nightmare to knit with.

Why am I knitworking?

Because I’m a bit KNiT obsessive and I’m hoping you’ll be too ; )

Where can I buy knitting needles and yarn?

Knit ‘nd Make in the Swan Centre (Rathmines, Dublin 6)
Springwools (Walkinstown, Dublin 12)
Stitch (Santry, Dublin 9)
The Constant Knitter (Christchurch, Dublin 8)
The Knitting Room (Donnycarney, Dublin 3)
This is Knit (City Centre, Dublin 2)

starting the year on the right or left foot…

Join the Dublin Knit Collective Sock  Club 2010. This sock club is open to everyone, there are no membership fees to join, there is no sign up list and best of all, no purchase is necessary; unless you don’t have a stash of sock yarn, dpn’s (double pointed needles) or circular needles.

The concept of the DKC Sock Club 2010 is to knit socks in 2010, simple isn’t it? Set a specific goal for yourself, such as, “I want to knit 12 pairs of socks in 2010.”

There is reason to believe that there are several Dublin knitters out there who have a stash of sock yarn just waiting to grow into a pair of feet; and maybe 2010 will be the year to make a dent in your sock yarn inventory.

If you don’t know how to knit socks or just want to improve your sock knitting skills contact your LYS for a Learn to Knit Sock class this year.

No sign up list, however, you can set your DKC Sock Club goal for 2010 by submitting a comment on this blog post. Throughout the year, DKC will be calling out to the Dublin knitters to check on your progress.

To start off 2010, January’s sock theme is cure the wintery blues.  What comes to  your mind? Blue socks? Cabled socks? Breaking away from the second sock syndrome?  Use your imagination…

No pressures…just knit and enjoy!
